Hyde FC manager Scott McNiven and his assistant Gavin McCann have both signed two-year contract extensions with the club.

The duo guided the Tigers to safety in the club’s first ever season in the Conference Premier in a campaign which included famous wins against the likes of former Football League giants Luton Town, Grimsby Town and Stockport, playoff winners and finalists Newport County and Wrexham and a 7-0 thumping of Woking.

Eventually finishing in 18th place, Scott and Gavin defied the odds to keep Hyde – bookmakers’ favourites for relegation at the start of the season – afloat in a division of full-time clubs while playing attractive football and recording some memorable results.

Speaking about the new deal, Scott said:

It’s something we’ve talked about for a while, but we wanted to do finish off the job of staying in the league.

It’s nice to get it all sorted and now the challenge is there and we are hungry to achieve more with the club. Last year we didn’t really work with a contract, so it’s nice for the club to offer us that and give us a lot of trust and I’m loving being a manager.

We know next season will be a massive challenge for us again as you only have to look at the teams coming up which makes it even tougher, but like last season it’s one we are relishing.

We’re looking to keep a nucleus of the squad as they did great for us and they now know what we are about and what standards we want. So if we can tweak it a little bit, learn from our mistakes that we made last season and add even more quality to the squad then I’ll be happy.

The club are delighted the pair have committed their futures with the club as we look forward to a second Conference Premier campaign.

23-year-old Luke has been a virtual ever-present in the Hyde side since signing at the start of this season and was voted supporters’ player of the season, with the centre-half picking up countless man-of-the-match awards and reportedly attracting interest from League One clubs.

Full-back Josh Brizell was voted by the supporters as young player of the season after a superb second term at Ewen Fields, while former Chester midfielder Alex Brown was picked by Scott McNiven as the manager’s player of the year following a number of tireless performances from the dynamic midfielder.

On-loan Blackpool midfielder Liam Tomsett was voted by his peers as players’ player of the season, and Phil Jevons took the trophy for leading goalscorer after netting 15 times.

We would like to thank all our players for their efforts this year and our fans for the support they’ve shown throughout the season. Details of season ticket prices for next year’s Conference Premier campaign will be available on the website shortly.

Match report

Hyde final game of their debut season in the Conference Premier turned into a bit of an anti-climax as Lincoln put five past the Tigers to secure their future in this division for next season.

The damage was done by a 2nd half hat-trick from Vadaine Oliver who’s power and pace caused Hyde problems all day long. After a cagey opening it was the visitors who took a grip on the game and a shot from Jake Jones was well saved by Dave Carnell but they did take the lead on 27 minutes when a Luke Ashworth header put Carnell under pressure he did well to nick the ball off Oliver’s toe but the onrushing Jones was brought down by Ashworth for a penalty and captain Alan Power confidently stepped up to give the visitors the lead.

Hyde did rally and Matty Blinkhorn just curled an effort wide after Lincoln’s offside trap had failed and then Louis Almond drove forward and fired a shot inches wide with his weaker left foot. Manager Scott McNiven’s hopes of going into the break just a goal down were dashed in injury time of the first half when Mo Fofana rose highest to head in a Power corner.

It was game over just 3 minutes into the 2nd half when Jake Sheridan did brilliantly to get in a cross right on the byline for Oliver to rise highest to head home at the back post, but Hyde responded immediately with, Fans player of the season, Ashworth heading home a Jamie Milligan corner at the near post and they had a couple of chances to reduce the arrears further but Liam Tomsett was denied twice first by Paul Farman in the Lincoln goal then by a superb from Nat Brown.

Oliver then got his second and Lincoln’s fifth as he was first to a bouncing ball to head home and then completed his hat-trick with a superb burst away from the Hyde defence to finish emphatically and spark mass celebrations amongst the travelling fans.

Hyde fans weren’t too downhearted at the end and stayed behind to applaud the Tigers players for their efforts this season.

Match report

By Luke Edwards

Hyde mathematically secured their Blue Square Bet Premier status on Saturday despite going down to defeat at Nuneaton. A defeat for Stockport County at home to Dartford sparked wild celebrations in the Tigers dressing room as the reality hit home. The win for the home edged them closer to safety it was they who had more purpose about them throughout the match.

It was Hyde who had the first chance of the game as the ball found, captain for the day, Phil Jevons and his curler was well held by Lee Burge under his own crossbar. It was Nuneaton though who were pressing and harrying and they nearly took the lead when Wes York’s cross was headed towards goal by Andy Brown but Ben Dennis was in the right place to clear off the line, they weren’t to be denied soon after when the same pair brought about the opening goal as York got down the right and his low cross was converted by Brown. Hyde had a good spell after this and passed the ball really well and nearly equalised when Jamie Milligan’s superb free-kick was flicked onto the post by Matty Blinkhorn, Luke Ashworth also had a shot well blocked.

They came out bright at the start of the second half as well as Robbie Williams’s flicked a header just wide. After this the home side really went for the throat and the Tigers makeshift defence was really put under pressure and they were breached again when a great flowing move by the Nuneaton midfield found Simon Forsdick who’s powerful shot flew into the net to leave Dave Carnell rooted to the spot. Carnell then produced a fantastic double save, first diving full length to save James Armson’s shot and then brilliantly reacting to keep out Louis Moult’s follow up before diving bravely at Brown’s feet to gather the ball, he was beaten again though 20 minutes from the end when Moult’s powerful flew past him to give him no chance and Nuneaton an unassailable lead. To their credit the Tigers did continue to try and play football but maybe lacked a cutting edge although a nice move involving Jevons and Shay McCarten was finished off well by Louis Almond who crashed in a shot off the crossbar. The final whistle went to spark celebrations from both sets of teams.

Match report

by Luke Edwards

Matty Blinkhorn scored the only goal as the Tigers bounced back from Saturday’s defeat to record a victory which, barring an amazing turnaround in results, will have proved the doubters wrong and see the Tigers play Conference Premier football for a 2nd season. Hyde also had to play the whole of the 2nd half with 10 men after having captain Adam Griffin sent off the 3rd time this season after being involved with a scuffle with Ebbsfleet Liam Bellamy.

It was the visitors, who needed a win to keep their faint survival hopes alive, who started the brighter, with Liam Enver-Marum and Nathan Elder causing problems and both had shots off target, at the other end Louis Almond had a shot well saved by Preston Edwards. Ebbsfleet then had the best chance of the game when Enver-Marum’s shot crashed against the bar and into David Carnell’s hands, this was to prove a turning point, as from Carnell’s throw out, Hyde attacked and Almond got down the left and put in a low cross which Blinkhorn converted. Then the other main incident of the game as Bellamy and Griffin went in for a tackle, Bellamy looked to have stamped on Griffin, to which the Hyde captain retaliated and a melee ensued, after consulting with his assistant he showed Griffin a red card and oddly only a yellow for Bellamy.

Hyde went with just Blinkhorn upfront as they looked to contain their visitors but it was Hyde who had the better opportunities of the 2nd half, the first two fell to Phil Jevons the first he scuffed across goal as he went through on goal and the second chance he made well for himself drew Edwards but fired over. Almond then slalomed his way through the defence before shooting whilst off balance and firing just wide, in between this came the visitors best chance to draw level when Tom Phipp got clear but was denied by the outstretched leg of Carnell. Substitute Scott Spencer had chance to seal it when he blocked a clearance but with the goal seemingly at his mercy Edwards somehow blocked the ball with his back. Despite the 3 minutes of injury time Hyde held on comfortably and Ewen Fields erupted when the final whistle went.
